Today…
Outside my window: it’s a beautiful day. Cold, crisp and not a cloud in the sky. A good day to bundle up and spend outside, but I’ll be in here packing, of course.

I am hearing: ,eerily, silence. This is pretty amazing.

I am thinking: That it’ll be nice to pretty much pick out my own fit and finish for a house, even though the fit and finish in our current house is perfect and I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m also thinking that my Christmas decorations are up and the house is pretty clean right now, which makes me relax.

I am hoping: for a digital scale and the ab lounger.  I worked out everyday after we made an exercise room at my parent’s house. It’s very convenient to have that space in your house. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough room, but I think I could stick the ab lounger in the kitchen while I use it and then put it away when I’m done. OR I could just beg Alex to move to NC and Mom to convert the garage/frog into an inlaw.

I am reading: The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown, only because Phil left it on the table, and I can’t help but read anything around. I read a third of Dear American Airlines, but haven’t gotten a copy from the library to finish it. After reading an article in Women’s Day magazine, I really want to check out The Happiness Project.

I am creating: lunchmeat. No really, I’m roasting a turkey so that I can shred it for lunches.

I am wearing: a black tank top and sage green shorts. It’s really cold in here, so the bathrobe will be fetched soon.

In the kitchen: is January 2010’s issue of Women’s Day magazine, open to Denise Austin’s eating plan.  It gives you 4 meals a day for one person, which I’m then multiplying by 5 for the menagerie living here. It’s all based on the Power of 12, which is also what her new book is about. In addition to following this diet, I’m drinking one protein shake a day, taking my fish oil and vitamins, and failing to work out. For dinner this week:

  • Monday: Macaroni, Sausages, and meatballs in Francisco Rinaldi’s Tomato and Basil sauce
  • Tuesday: Cilantro Lime Chicken, homemade mashed potatoes, and green beans
  • Wednesday:  I need to use up the meatballs, sausage, and chicken in the frigde…so I’m thinking some sort of funky meat stoup….and salad
  • Thursday:  Maple Glazed Salmon, rice, and veggies….and salad
  • Friday: veggie quesadilla (which looks wicked easy to make)
  • Saturday: Grilled Shrimp with Honey-kissed Grilled Pineapple and steamed snow peas….and probably salad (why did I buy so much salad this week?)

Around the house: Maintain, Maintain, Maintain. My Christmas decorations are already up, so I don’t have to worry about that. I do need to clean the basement still.

Plans for the week: Peapod didn’t bring a bunch of stuff I ordered, so I trip to the market is in store. Other than that, we’re going to focus on finish work at the new place. I want to get floor, paint, plumbing, and  gas line estimates this week, which means I need to get my butt moving. Derby practice on Sunday per usual.

  • A beautiful kitchen island (finally!)
Welcome to what I like to call THE LONGEST PROJECT IN THE HISTORY OF MAN. OK, a little dramatic, but really. It took forever. Serious. Serious. It started two and a half years ago when I took our builder basic kitchen island: And added some molding and paint: The sides of the island were made from that crapastic laminate stuff that you need to paint with pri […]

  • Disturbing. Distressing. Heartbreaking. Sad.
A sense of sadness. Uneasiness. Distress. A memory of many decades ago. Back. Clear. Painful. Like it just happened. Just now. It involves a boy. A young boy… 14, going on 15. A boy I had in one of my Reading classes. A boy whom Barry had, too, in one of his Math classes. The boy was small.  Slight.  A shock of black, wavy hair a stark contrast to his pale s […]

  • How to Bring Peace to the Witching Hour
Many parents notice that from roughly 4 to 5 pm, every day is a difficult time for their children. This rough spot in the day seems to affect children from newborns on up to adolescence.  To be honest, it’s the one time of the day that takes me to the brink of absolutely losing it. What is the witching hour? This hour that rocks and rolls in all the wrong wa […]

  • Emotional RICE
Any good derby girl (that is, one who has had an injury) knows the importance of RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Following these steps ensures a timely recovery from the breaks and bruises that come with the sport. I am an expert at these steps because I have suffered quite a few injuries over the past few years. I was thinking how nice it would […]

  • On geeking out.
Yesterday was a day for geeking out. I posted a cute video of my 4 year old telling me a Phineas and Ferb bedtime story, swooning with mommy love at his creativity and may I just say, fantastic memory. It really impresses me how much of the show’s details he has absorbed and memorized – and this is a trait that carries through to many other areas. Songs we l […]
