Looking Back: 2009
Procrastination was holding me back!

When I looked at my to-do list last year, many of the entries like “call Donna ” and “follow up with New Corp.” were copied from a previous week. Putting off unappealing tasks may be human nature, but for an entrepreneur, procrastination can be deadly.

This year, I’m holding myself responsible. I will follow up on that great referral, make that important sales call, mail the marketing package, and write the proposal. I find that once I’m taking action, the rest seems much less difficult than I had feared.

Latest Site Launch: Joe Danella
Some important design techniques.

Busy in his studio, artist Joe Danella works 10-3 just about everyday — building and designing beautiful handcrafted birdhouses. Joe has owned and operated his business since 1991, but he’s been making things all his life.

I took his existing site, redesigned the layout and look, and launched an improved site that he can edit himself. As a small business owner myself, I understand the need to update your own site without having to call someone to do it every time. I’ve created this and other sites using the open source Joomla platform. You can check out my portfolio here.

Roller Derby Workout Video
* * * * * (5 stars).

I finally got the Roller Derby Workout video, and it’s intense. The exercises have helped me with my form and targeting muscle groups that I wasn’t aware I even had. The outfits are cheesy, but I expected no less. I’d recommend this to everyone looking for a strength workout. If you’re looking for cardio, go to practice. Check out the trailer on my post.

Looking ahead: 2010
My plan for the future

My goals for 2010 include writing for more publications, maxing out my IRA, and scheduling more speaking engagements. If any of you out there can point me in the right direction, I’d appreciate it!

I hope you’re having a wonderful year. There’s only one week left before the first big conferences for women in Rhode Island commence. I’ll be at Building Bridges Through Networking and the Soul at Work Unconference: Be Visible. I hope we can connect if you’re going! Email me, DM me, @me, leave a comment on my wall, whatever…. I’m always around.

  • A beautiful kitchen island (finally!)
Welcome to what I like to call THE LONGEST PROJECT IN THE HISTORY OF MAN. OK, a little dramatic, but really. It took forever. Serious. Serious. It started two and a half years ago when I took our builder basic kitchen island: And added some molding and paint: The sides of the island were made from that crapastic laminate stuff that you need to paint with pri […]

  • Disturbing. Distressing. Heartbreaking. Sad.
A sense of sadness. Uneasiness. Distress. A memory of many decades ago. Back. Clear. Painful. Like it just happened. Just now. It involves a boy. A young boy… 14, going on 15. A boy I had in one of my Reading classes. A boy whom Barry had, too, in one of his Math classes. The boy was small.  Slight.  A shock of black, wavy hair a stark contrast to his pale s […]

  • How to Bring Peace to the Witching Hour
Many parents notice that from roughly 4 to 5 pm, every day is a difficult time for their children. This rough spot in the day seems to affect children from newborns on up to adolescence.  To be honest, it’s the one time of the day that takes me to the brink of absolutely losing it. What is the witching hour? This hour that rocks and rolls in all the wrong wa […]

  • Emotional RICE
Any good derby girl (that is, one who has had an injury) knows the importance of RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Following these steps ensures a timely recovery from the breaks and bruises that come with the sport. I am an expert at these steps because I have suffered quite a few injuries over the past few years. I was thinking how nice it would […]

  • On geeking out.
Yesterday was a day for geeking out. I posted a cute video of my 4 year old telling me a Phineas and Ferb bedtime story, swooning with mommy love at his creativity and may I just say, fantastic memory. It really impresses me how much of the show’s details he has absorbed and memorized – and this is a trait that carries through to many other areas. Songs we l […]
